Fifth Week - Prostitution

Image
Prostitution in Sao Paulo, Brazil Wilfredo Rafael Rodriguez Hernandez Creative Commons Zero, Public Domain Dedication WikiMedia Commons This week...during the discussion appeared the question: if prostitution as a sexual activity, must be legalized? My opinion was that yes, it must be so the system can legally offer some rights and protection or at least some way to be in the system so the people practicing this job can have a path to claim. What I didn´t know is that it doesn't have to be legalized to be regularized, and after talking to a lawyer in Colombia, explained to me that are two different concepts. That´s the case in Colombia. It is not legalized, it is not prohibited, but it is regularized. And that is what I finally, think it should be: regularized. She also explained to me, that as a job, it is under all the worker's laws and rights.  Some are in opposition because it is just a way to have statistics and it won´t prevent them from being hurt. I understand. It ...

Fourth week: Women issues and movements in LA

Image
Women in Latinoamerica have many issues, especially violence issues. We have social issues too, like the possibility of abortion or discrimination in a work environment and the salaries. Also, the types of jobs she can apply for or the system accepts. In the last post, for example, I mentioned the care workers and the poor or not valued in these jobs but the preference of having a woman in those kinds of jobs. The readings of this week also mentioned that is not only because they are women but you have to add some other aspects like the color of their skin. This shows that society has many issues when a woman you are going to be treated or given a service like health care or job opportunities.  We have seen in this modern world that is an international issue too, as an example many actresses in the Hollywood industry also have spoken when they have a chance about it. Or the scientists who claim their position in the academic world. But it has been hard to achieve and a long ...

Third week: Women, is necessary to define them?

Image
Defining women has become an issue, especially, because of men's domain over centuries. Still, there are countries where men have unmeasured control over women. Recently we have known of the strict power of the Taliban over women as shown below: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pictoline (@pictoline) Women in this type of culture or power are imprisoned in their own houses and is very hard to escape if they want to be in places where they can be more free at least to express themselves. View this post on Instagram A post shared by El Espectador (@elespectador) Even in this overcontrolled domain, some are trying to protest and express themselves, taking great risks. Some are thinking if it would be a good thing to bring a newborn into that society, especially if it is a woman. Some others want to escape, but it is very hard for them to achieve it. But why is this related to the meaning of being a woman? If we take the above ...

Resagos de la colonia

Estos vídeos me trajeron a la mente la discusión de la segunda semana.  Colonization has perpetuated our culture and we can live it every day in the way we express ourselves. This video is an example of two of the phrases that is common in our culture.     Even though this expression has a 'dark' beginning, it has also brought good things because it has transformed with time, like being considerate to others. In the case, of 'Sumerce', it has more of a servant feeling, but it has turned out with time in something that is a good tool for customer service. So, new generations and the change of economy and power, have made these expressions in a good thing if they are not overused or in the case of 'Que pena con usted', to believe or use it when you don't know what is that you are ashamed of. in this case, is still a negative thing, because the person is feeling inferior to the other.  View this post on Instagram A post shared by BBC News Mundo ...

Second week: No man is a prophet in his own land.

Image
During our second class, we discussed many things but one took a while.  Photo by  yousef alfuhigi  on  Unsplash  What made us, as Latinos, find success in other lands. During the discussion, a phrase pops up that we as Latinos say a lot:  No man is a prophet in his own land.  Researching more about the origin of this phrase, I found out that it comes from the bible  (Luke 4:16-30): " 23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘ Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum .’  24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued,  “no prophet is accepted in his hometown".   It wasn't rare to me because is a fact that the primary religion is Christianity in its different ways. The thing is that the bold phrase before was also referring to what we discussed in class. It's not only to go to another place, usually the North (North America or Eur...

First week (even though is publish later. :) )

Image
This first entry is about belonging somewhere. Here it goes: Journal – first class Aug 22– Aug 26 , 2024  The first class was a great dynamic because of the interventions, but above all, two stayed stuck in my head. Two girls in the class are daughters of immigrant Latinos in the USA. Usually, you think, that when an immigrant raises their child, they become more included in society. My cousin was born in Colombia and grew up in the States, but she identifies as Colombian because of her childhood in Colombia. My classmates have a different situation: they were born and grew up in the States. Are they from here or there? Or both? Before, I had heard this feeling of being from nowhere of immigrants who decided to move their lives to another country. This is because when they are in the foreign country, they are aliens and if they return to their home countries, especially for a long time, then they become from the other country. Although these classmates were born in the USA, a...
