9th week: Borders

Image
I have several friends who don't believe in borders. They say that the world is for all: we should travel freely. In my case, I think is a good dream for travelers, and I also understand and take international borders, as a reality. Every country is like a house, and the people of that house say who enters and who doesn't. The thing for me is that this issue is more complicated than that. Maybe if it wasn't for artificial borders, discrimination still could exist. Borders are very complicated. As the author Nail (2015: p. 2) mentioned: "What remains problematic about border theory is that it is not strictly a territorial, political, juridical, or economic phenomenon but equally an aterritorial, apolitical, nonlegal, and noneconomic phenomenon at the same time ". Borders are not only the line that divides countries but also what is in between and more. The most complicated thing is what happens outside and inside the border. Nail continued, "a border seem...

Sixth week: Blood issues

In the audiovisual world, we have a phrase that says: "Reality surpasses fiction" and when you hear things people lived in wars, conquests, or colonies, it seems unbelievable but at the same time, you know that maybe it was worse than what we read. In the readings of this week, we read about ideologies of  'cleaning blood´ or ´making your race better´, since before the colonization of America, and how brutally it was practiced in the Americas. Racism is something that even today when we get all the information, we still live with the consequences and the new groups that appear that still think this way. In this video, in a short time, it shows some examples of what this means, not only in the days of colonization, but in the XXth century, and what is happening today. Fifth Week - Prostitution

Image
Prostitution in Sao Paulo, Brazil Wilfredo Rafael Rodriguez Hernandez Creative Commons Zero, Public Domain Dedication WikiMedia Commons This week...during the discussion appeared the question: if prostitution as a sexual activity, must be legalized? My opinion was that yes, it must be so the system can legally offer some rights and protection or at least some way to be in the system so the people practicing this job can have a path to claim. What I didn´t know is that it doesn't have to be legalized to be regularized, and after talking to a lawyer in Colombia, explained to me that are two different concepts. That´s the case in Colombia. It is not legalized, it is not prohibited, but it is regularized. And that is what I finally, think it should be: regularized. She also explained to me, that as a job, it is under all the worker's laws and rights.  Some are in opposition because it is just a way to have statistics and it won´t prevent them from being hurt. I understand. It ...

Fourth week: Women issues and movements in LA

Image
Women in Latinoamerica have many issues, especially violence issues. We have social issues too, like the possibility of abortion or discrimination in a work environment and the salaries. Also, the types of jobs she can apply for or the system accepts. In the last post, for example, I mentioned the care workers and the poor or not valued in these jobs but the preference of having a woman in those kinds of jobs. The readings of this week also mentioned that is not only because they are women but you have to add some other aspects like the color of their skin. This shows that society has many issues when a woman you are going to be treated or given a service like health care or job opportunities.  We have seen in this modern world that is an international issue too, as an example many actresses in the Hollywood industry also have spoken when they have a chance about it. Or the scientists who claim their position in the academic world. But it has been hard to achieve and a long ...

Third week: Women, is necessary to define them?

Image
Defining women has become an issue, especially, because of men's domain over centuries. Still, there are countries where men have unmeasured control over women. Recently we have known of the strict power of the Taliban over women as shown below: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pictoline (@pictoline) Women in this type of culture or power are imprisoned in their own houses and is very hard to escape if they want to be in places where they can be more free at least to express themselves. View this post on Instagram A post shared by El Espectador (@elespectador) Even in this overcontrolled domain, some are trying to protest and express themselves, taking great risks. Some are thinking if it would be a good thing to bring a newborn into that society, especially if it is a woman. Some others want to escape, but it is very hard for them to achieve it. But why is this related to the meaning of being a woman? If we take the above ...
